The AVM™ SureScreen System provides an accurate, easy-to-use visual and inexpensive test for the diagnosis and treatment of Human Papillomavirus (HPV), Bovine Papillomavirus (BPV), and potentially cervical cancer.

The actinic light-based exam allows instant identification of HPV lesions, the precursors to cervical cancer. The system also allows veterinarians to identify BPV, which can cause warts and some cancers in bovine and equidae (horse family). Once an infection is identified, the health care professional can begin monitoring and treating the infection in order to prevent more serious health risks.

Our Technology

Products

  • AVM™ SureScreen Colposcope (Prototype-ready)
Proprietary filtration technology incorporated “AVM Inside” into a high end colposcope.
  • AVM™ SureScreen Portable Unit (Prototype-ready)
Portable unit designed to permit HPV visualization in varied clinical situations.
  • AVM™ SureScreen Single-Use Packet
Provides the necessary reagents and supplies to perform the AVM™ System test.
  • AVM™ SureScreen Disposable Unit (Prototype-ready)
Disposable unit is designed to serve the low/no resource areas.
  • AVM™ SureScreen Universal Adapter (Prototype development)
Allows the AVM™ proprietary filtration technology to function with any colposcope.

Research

  • Incorporation of Photodynamic Therapy
Current surgical treatment methods can cause cervical incompetence and affect fertility.
  • Optimize photosensitizing agents
Ideal agent would by topical, quick acting and have wide differential between normal and abnormal tissue.
  • Incorporation into Cytology Screening

The Applications

Aequorea’s technology has a wide range of immediate applications:

Immediate Applications

  • Immediate HPV Diagnosis
Diagnosis of HPV lesions can be identified using the AVM™ SureScreen products listed above.
  • Follow-up testing to inconclusive Pap results
Only HPV damaged cells are pre-cursors to cervical cancer. Our technology can be used to differentiate between “abnormal” Pap results that are of medical concern, and those of no significance or that resulted from the errors inherent in the Pap test itself.
  • Guided Biopsy
Our technology, in allowing the cells to be visually identified, can guide the physician to the exact location and depth at which the biopsy sample must be taken.

Veterinary Applications

  • Bovine Papilloma Virus (BPV) related diseases in horses, cattle and pets
Provides veterinarians with the tools needed to facilitate field diagnosis, meaning veterinarians can use AVM™ SureScreen portable devices to diagnose BPV in any setting.

Other Applications

  • Guided Cytology (improving microscopic inspection results)
Aequorea’s technology could be incorporated into cytology microscopes to draw the technologist’s and pathologist’s attention directly to HPV infected cells, (i.e., those with the highest probability of abnormality.) This would be a great benefit when viewing a field of between 50,000 and 300,000 cells on a slide.

Did you know?

Every 2 minutes a woman dies of cervical cancer somewhere in the world.

Approximately 20 million Americans are infected with Human Papillomavirus (HPV).

Cervical Cancer is the second most common cancer in women.

Approximately 5.5 million people will contract HPV each year.

There are more than 40 HPV types that can infect the genital areas of males and females.

Each year, about 12,000 women get cervical cancer in the U.S.

Papillomatosis becomes a herd problem when a large group of young, susceptible cattle become infected.

A horse that has even one lesion, is liable to the disease for life.

Sarcoids multiply over the summer and grow over the winter.

You should keep cattle with warts away from all horses to prevent Sarcoid development.

The simplest method of prevention is to separate infected animals from healthy animals.

It is important to minimize the use of equipment, feeders, waters, etc. that come into contact with healthy and unhealthy animals.

Sarcoids can develop in all equid species including the Horse, Donkey, Mule, Zebra, and Przewalksi Horse.
